Following up his adventurous, retro-futuristic debut EP Interactive Affairs, Fan Fiordo brings a more wistful anthology to the table in Chameleonic Pleasures. Eccentric sounds evoke mystique and wonder in free-flowing, minimalist arrangements, inventing vivid fantasies in the mind’s eye. The music owes its esoteric melodies to the Korg M1 synthesizer, serving as a tribute to a personal favorite sound card of Fiordo’s, the MPC-11 “Akira”. Though many are familiar with the M1 from its prolific use in ‘90s pop and house music, few are likely to recognize it under the visage of Akira. With jaunty chimes, striking drums, haunting choirs, and fluctuant tones, Akira brings an eclectic, yet quintessentially late-eighties personality to the mainstream instrument. The Argentinian producer flourishes in conducting such an ensemble, conjuring a soundscape as lush and quixotic as the album’s title suggests. With its austere charm, Chameleonic Pleasures feels like a breath of fresh air in the complex and crowded world of modern electronic music.
